Hawaii Seeking Support for Athletic Facilities

Hawaii AD Jim Donovan has submitted a request for $12.5 million from Governor Neil Abercrombie to upgrade athletic facilities. The governor, a UH alumnus, has been outspoken in recent months about the need to improve UH’s athletic facilities.

Penn State's Ice Hockey Arena Ahead of Schedule

Penn State officials said that construction of the $70 million Pegula Ice Arena is several weeks ahead of schedule because of the recent streak of mild winter weather. The 220,000 square-foot, 6,000-seat arena, is expected to be completed by September 2013.

UConn Soccer Stadium Receives $3 Million Gift

The UConn athletic department announced that it has received a $3 million commitment toward the construction of a new soccer stadium. The anonymous pledge was made by a former student-athlete. UConn has more than $4.5 million in pledges earmarked for the soccer facility project.

The Cronin Athletic Center was funded entirely by private donations, and cost a total of $7 million. "The entire facility allows us to have indoor practices for all of our sports," AD Tim Wabler said. "It provides additional space for academic tutoring, and also there is a training room for rehab and care for our student-athletes."

Colorado State President Dictates Stadium Requirements

Colorado State President Tony Frank said any recommendations on a football stadium must fall within the following parameters: 1) CSU will not put the stadium on existing open green space, including the intramural fields; 2) CSU won't consider putting the stadium in front of "significant existing view shields" so as to protect views of the mountains; 3) All recommendations from the Advisory Committee must take into serious account any impact on neighbors near a new stadium; 4) State appropriation, tuition, fees or taxes will not be considered as funding sources for a stadium. Other than those limitations, getting an on campus stadium should be a cinch!

Gamecocks Building Equestrian Locker Room

The South Carolina board of trustees recently approved plans to build a new locker room for the equestrian team in accordance with Title IX. The construction is estimated to cost USC $495,000. A recent visit from a gender equity consultant deemed the new construction necessary.

Indiana Secures Naming Gift for Baseball Stadium

Indiana University will name its new baseball facility Bart Kaufman Field in honor of a major gift to IU Athletics from Bart Kaufman, a former IU baseball student-athlete and chairman and CEO of Indianapolis-area Kaufman Financial Corp. Construction for the $19.8 facility is expected to begin in the spring with completion scheduled in time for the 2013 season.
