August 2010, Personnel Moves

Myers to Retire from Texas Tech at Year's End

Thu, Aug 26, 2010

Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers has announced his retirement, effective May 31, 2011, according to a statement released by the university.

“It has been my honor to serve Texas Tech University, my alma mater, as its athletics director for the last 14 years,” Myers said.  “Together we have accomplished a lot since the Big 12 started in the fall of 1996 and it has truly been a team effort.  Our budget has grown from $12 million that year to just over $50 million for this coming school year.

“Overall, our facilities are among the best in the Big 12 Conference and we owe a debt of gratitude to so many donors in the private sector that have stepped up and made our dreams of great facilities a reality.  I feel like now is the time to turn this job over to someone else and I will be supportive of that person in every way that I can.”

Myers, who just turned 74 this month, has been associated with Tech all but a few years since he left Borger High School and started his college basketball career in 1955, eventually becoming the university’s first all-Southwest Conference player in any sport. To read more, click here.
