Academics New Mess for UNC's Davis

By   Fri, Aug 27, 2010

Years and years ago, Miami brought in Butch Davis to clean up a football program run amok. Will North Carolina have to bring someone in to clean up after Davis?

Thursday's bombshell - that the university discovered potential academic misconduct within the football program while cooperating with an NCAA investigation into players' potential illegal contact with agents - raises serious questions about Davis' future at North Carolina.

The biggest one might be this: How can North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp retain "every confidence" in him when a tutor who once worked for Davis' family is now the focus of an investigation into possible academic improprieties within his football program? To read more, click here.

Nevada's President: No Penalty Obligation to the WAC

By   Thu, Aug 26, 2010

In an effort to provide BYU with some assurance, the WAC held a teleconference call with eight of its member institutions. Boise State, which in June announced it would be joining the MWC in 2011, did not participate. WAC Commissioner Karl Benson laid out the plans of a $5 million exit penalty for any school that left within five years (Louisiana Tech was exempted because it has indicated its desire to move to a conference closer to the South, such as Conference USA).

It was previously reported that Nevada did not participate in the call. However, Benson said Tuesday that Nevada athletic director Cary Groth did participate but abstained from the vote. The other seven schools agreed to the clause and sent in signed documents. Glick verbally agreed in a separate conversation with Benson on Aug. 14. To read more, click here.

Pressure on Six New Coaches

By   Wed, Aug 25, 2010

Six coaches who will be under heavy scrutiny from the get-go in their new jobs:

Jimbo Fisher, Florida State. It's certainly not Fisher's fault that Florida State felt compelled to push Bobby Bowden out to make room for him. Still, for the move to be justified, Fisher has to win right away.

Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech. In Lubbock, Mike Leach was similar to Bowden. The Red Raiders were never more successful than they were in Leach's 10 seasons. Fans adored him and many were angered when he was fired. Winning over those Texas Tech supporters won't be easy for Tuberville.

Brian Kelly, Notre Dame. Kelly has one thing going for him that Fisher and Tuberville don't. The guy Kelly is replacing (Charlie Weis) was not particularly well liked by Fighting Irish supporters. So while another 6-6 season will not go over well, he doesn't have to take a giant step forward in year one to win over the faithful.

Derek Dooley, Tennessee. Much like Kelly, Dooley is replacing a guy the locals won't miss in Lane Kiffin. But the Volunteers can't offered a long rebuilding process and another down season. Not when their main competition is Florida.

Mike London, Virginia. The Cavaliers have slipped so far behind rival Virginia Tech, they can barely catch a glimpse of the Hokies these days. It would be surprising if Virginia didn't have another losing season, especially in a tough ACC division, but London really can't afford for the Cavs to take another step back before they start moving forward.

Turner Gill, Kansas. Much fuss was made when Gill was passed over for the Auburn job for Gene Chizik, who ended up having a very solid first season with the Tigers. Now Gill, who did a remarkable job at long downtrodden Buffalo, gets his shot to prove he can get it done in one of the six power conferences.

DAC, Frontier Conferences to discuss future

NCAA Revenue and Expense Data Report Shows Problems

By   Thu, Aug 19, 2010

Data collected from the 2008-09 report compiled by Transylvania University faculty member Dan Fulks, which include the early stages of the recession, reveal more of a burden on institutional allocations to balance athletics budgets. Just 14 programs from the Football Bowl Subdivision generated revenues over expenses, compared with 25 such programs in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

In addition, the median institutional allocation for athletics (total expenses minus revenue directly generated by the athletics department) at the FBS level rose from about $8 million in 2007-08 to $10.2 million in 2008-09. That means FBS institutions are committing more dollars to maintain their athletics program. To read more, click here.

Three Coaches on the Rise Suddenly Out of Football

By   Tue, Aug 31, 2010

In 2008, no coach in the country could have appeared more secure in his job than Texas Tech’s Mike Leach, Kansas’ Mark Mangino and South Florida’s Jim Leavitt. All three had brought their programs unprecedented success. Heck, Leavitt started his program from scratch in a trailer. Leach and Mangino took floundering Big 12 programs and made them relevant. Both were chosen national coach of the year.

One season later, they were all gone, sent packing for the same reason: allegations of player mistreatment. Not since Ohio State’s Woody Hayes had clocked a Clemson player on the sideline in the 1978 Gator Bowl had a coach’s behavior toward players created such a stir. And now there were three incidents in the same season?

It was Coaches Gone Wild.

“That they all came to fruition in this particular year, that’s what the phenomenal thing was about it,” said Grant Teaff, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. “I dare say, as you look to the future, it won’t happen again. It’s extraordinary.” To read more, click here.

"So I said, 'What's the next alternative?' The next alternative, we ain't going to renew your contract," Bowden said with a big laugh. "Does that sound like I resigned?"
