Hey CBS! Stop Giving Us a Break!

By Richard Lehmann   Fri, Mar 26, 2010

What can kill the suspense of a hotly contested NCAA Tournament basketball game quicker than a power failure in the arena? Commercials! Lots and lots of them. CSBN is all about the business of college sports, and we're committed to helping our readers stay on top of the breaking news in their industry, but there comes a point when commerce gets in the way of the product, and that's exactly what happened during the first night of the Sweet Sixteen. When the Xavier - Kansas State game was winding down (over and over again!) and there were numerous breaks in the action, why not switch to the Cornell - Kentucky game at least once or twice, or give us a feel for the intensity of the moment in the arena? It got so bad we'd even prefer to see shots of the coaches' loved ones chewing on their nails rather than sit through another ad. We don't need to see Capitol One and Subway, etc. ad nauseam. In several decades of watching sports of all kinds on TV, this is the first time we actually sat through a contest with our index finger on the mute button ready to press it at the sight of a foot-long sandwich. (Which, by the way, is loaded with five times more meat and toppings than the actual inch-tall sandwich they serve you...but that's another story.)
